Bull Terrier The Night Watch — after Rembrandt van Rijn, 1642 | Tapestry

The Night Watch
after Rembrandt van Rijn, 1642

Not a night scene at all — centuries of varnish darkened it and the name stuck. In 1715 it was cut down on all four sides to fit a wall; the trimmed-off figures survive only in an old copy.

The militia is assembling. Some of them have understood the instruction.

After the original in the Rijksmuseum.
