Gleason's New Standard Map of the World, 1892 | Beach Towel

Gleason's New Standard Map of the World
Alexander Gleason, 1892

The real thing. In 1892 Alexander Gleason of Buffalo, New York, patented this "scientifically and practically correct" map of the world "as it is": flat, centered on the North Pole, with a longitude and time calculator built in.

Reproduced from an original copy, stains and folds and all.

From an 1892 original in the Norman B. Leventhal Map & Education Center, Boston Public Library. Pairs with Plate I, Terra Plana, from The Forbidden Atlas.
