Bull Terrier Washington Crossing the Delaware — after Emanuel Leutze, 1851 | Blanket
$54.99
Washington Crossing the Delaware
after Emanuel Leutze, 1851
Painted in Duesseldorf, using American tourists and art students as models. The first version burned in Leutze's studio, was restored, hung in Bremen for ninety-two years and was destroyed by Allied bombs in September 1942. This is the replacement. The flag had not been designed at the time of the crossing, and the crossing happened at night.
Standing up in the boat was a poor idea in 1776 and remains one. Nobody has sat down.
After the original in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
