Themire Crowned by the Graces
after the Sevres Manufactory, 1777
Not a painting but a porcelain plaque, and three artists deep: Charles Nicolas Dodin painted it onto Sevres soft paste in 1777, after an engraving by Noel Le Mire, after a painting by Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen. Themire herself is not a real person - she is a nymph out of French pastoral verse, crowned by the Graces to signify chaste love.
A copy of a copy of a painting of somebody who never existed. We have added one further layer and consider the matter closed.
After the original in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
