The Gleaners
after Jean-Francois Millet, 1857
Three women gathering the grain left behind after harvest — the poorest work in rural France. Critics found the painting alarming: sympathy for the rural poor was a dangerous thing to show so soon after 1848.
The work continues. Nobody has looked up.
After the original in the Musee d'Orsay.
