Bull Terrier Napoleon Crossing the Alps — after Jacques-Louis David, 1801 | Tapestry

Napoleon Crossing the Alps
after Jacques-Louis David, 1801

Napoleon refused to sit for it and crossed the Alps on a mule, not a rearing stallion. He told David that nobody knows whether portraits of great men resemble them, only that their genius lives.

The pose is inherited. The confidence appears to be genuine.

After the original in Chateau de Malmaison.
