Bull Terrier The Arnolfini Portrait — after Jan van Eyck, 1434 | Mug

The Arnolfini Portrait
after Jan van Eyck, 1434

Van Eyck signed the back wall rather than the frame — ‘Jan van Eyck was here, 1434’ — and painted his own reflection in the convex mirror behind the couple, along with a second witness.

Two witnesses in the mirror. Everyone is behaving impeccably.

After the original in the National Gallery, London.
